FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - Just one week remains to drop off recycling at Southgate Plaza before the site closes for good.
The recycling site on Pettit Avenue will close Saturday, August 13.
Department of Environmental Management Director Tom Fox says all of Allen County’s drop-off locations have been strained since the start of the pandemic.
Add in staffing issues and an increase in people illegal dumping while attendants are away, and the Southgate site couldn’t keep up.
Fox says they’re working to find a new location in the area.
"We’re obviously concerned for the stress it will put on the sites that are still open, but then we’re also concerned that people who are currently recycling just won’t anymore because it won’t be as convenient," Fox said.
People can still drop off recycling at the site in Southeast Fort Wayne at 2509 E Pontiac Street.
There are also locations in Northwest Fort Wayne near 2 Fort Recovery Road, in Leo-Cedarville at 14701 Schwartz Road, and in Monroeville at 110 W South Street.
Due to staffing issues, Fox encourages people to check the department website or call ahead to make sure a location is open before making long drives.
