Derecho aftermath: Food for Waynedale

Food drop off on the back side of Foster Park Plaza

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) – Some Waynedale residents are still in need after last week’s derecho.

“I still don’t have internet,” Taylor Crane said.

Others need housing, but Crane says a major need right now is food because some residents, including himself, lost power for multiple days.

“My power was out until the Friday night … all of the food had spoiled and I was broke,” he said.

Crane has lived in Fort Wayne for most of his life, and said it’s difficult seeing how heavily this storm impacted his friends and neighbors.

“People have been displaced from their homes, people have lost all of their food and it needs replaced,” he said. “There’s a lot of people that have been negatively impacted here in Waynedale.”

So Thursday and Friday, from 2-7 p.m., he’s collecting food at the back side of Foster Park Plaza  just off Brooklyn Avenue.

The food will be distributed on Saturday between noon and 6 p.m.

Up the road from there, Wellspring Interfaith Social Services is also pitching in to help Waynedale.

They’re extending their food bank hours Thursday from 2-6 p.m. for people to pick up food.

Executive Director Melissa Rinehart said this fits right in with their mission to fight food insecurity.

“We have about a 143% increase [in food insecurity] to date from a year ago at the height of one of the waves of the pandemic,” she said.

Though it’ll take a while for everything to return back to normal, Crane and Rinehart hope these gestures make an impact.

“Every little bit, even if you would normally give 50 dollars to an organization like ours, five dollars is something that helps us,” Rinehart said.

Because in times like this, every small act matters.

Crane’s food drive needs perishables like meats, cheeses and milk, but will also accept nonperishables.

He is also looking for volunteers to help with Saturday’s distribution.
