FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - I-469 has been cleared after multiple crashes shut down lanes around 12:20.
An ISP trooper stopped to assist with what was believed to be a slide-off on the southbound side of the interstate. The vehicle had been in a crash with a semi that left the scene.
The driver of the car was treated at the scene for pain.
Another trooper stationed himself on the shoulder a half mile back near the Wheelock Road underpass to warn drivers of the incident up ahead.
The warnings did not stop drivers from continuing at unsafe speeds.
By 12:40 p.m., numerous troopers and officers were responding to multiple crashes.
The six-mile stretch of southbound I-469 from I-69 to SR 37 was shut down for safety.
There were five crashes with significant damage, one minor injury, and multiple fender-benders.
The lanes were shut down for more than two hours, causing major re-routing and traffic delays.
