september is national preparedness month and local officials want to make sure you're prepared. fox 55's caleb saylor has more on how you can prepare if disaster strikes. every city and town in the country is at risk for some sort of disaster. whether you think you're at risk or not, getting prepared before it happens is key.mick newton is the emergency management director for noble county. he says if you're unsure how to get started, start by searching the internet for home preparedness tips "there are wonderful websites out there, one i refer a lot of people to is ready.gov and a lot of these have lists, and ideas, and stuff for you to think about."things to think about include "what are the risks my family faces? what do i need to survive a disaster? where do i go if i have to leave?" then you can start to preparefor someone like deborah boyd, she would need her medication to survive "if you had to leave your house because there was some sort of disaster, something like that, would you be prepared? no i would not be prepared. i'm on medication and everything, and i think about it. no i would not."for people in noble county, you may need a plan for evacuation because of how often hazardous materials travel through the county. "our number one threat we feel in noble county is the risk of a hazardous material incident, and while the probability of it happening is really small, the impact if it does is great."once you know your risks, create a plan if you have to evacuate and if you need to shelter in place and make sure everyone in the family knows the plan. you also need to create a disaster kit with food, water, first aid supplies, and other items to keep safe.you may also need a kit for a disabled family members, the elderly, and even your pets. and if you aren't already, take boyd's advice.
