truckers could soon be hauling freight across the country as young as 18.congress is considering a bill allowing c- d-l holders under 21 to cross state lines.right now ... drivers need to be 21 to drive semi's in to another state. good evening ... i'm hunter petroviak.senator todd young authored the bi-partisan bill with the goal of helping fix the nationwide driver shortage. but some drivers don't think that is the answer.fox 55's cody butler is live with more. truckers stopped here at the truck stop at us 30 and 69 say they don't think 18-year-olds should be driving across the country because driving a big rig is a lot different than driving car.but senator todd young says his proposal would actually help make the roads safer. american trucking associations estimates more than 51- thousand semi drivers are still needed to move america's freight on time.that leaves companies ... and elected officials looking for solutions.one solution ... is allowing drivers as young as 18 drive across state lines. some states allow 18-year-olds to drive semis ... as long as they don't cross state lines. indiana is one.that means someone who just graduated high school can drive nearly 300 miles from fort wayne to evansville.but not 100 miles to toledo, ohio. many truckers stopped at the fort wayne truck plaza this afternoon say 18 is too young to drive over the road. senator todd young ... who wrote the bill in the senate says allowing younger drivers to go farther would help drive the price you pay for good down. his bill would require more training for those younger driver.they would need at least 400 hours with an experienced driver before they are set free. 3 right now the federal government is getting ready to test a program for younger c-d-l holders who are veterans to drive across state lines. reporting live ... cody bulter ... fox 55
