FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The TinCaps’ offense exploded on Friday night in a 9-3 win against the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) in the opener of a four-game homestand at Parkview Field.
Fort Wayne (27-32) broke out in the bottom of the third inning. With third baseman Luis Almanzar on first base, TinCaps first baseman Jalen Washington sent a ball over the left-field wall for his second home run of the season to put the TinCaps up, 2-1, at that point. Later in the frame, catcher Luis Campusano and shortstop Gabriel Arias followed with a bases-loaded walk and a bases-loaded single, respectively, to put Fort Wayne ahead, 4-1, after three.
Lansing (38-23) had opened the scoring in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and no one out, Brandon Grudzielanek hit a sacrifice fly out to right fielder Jack Suwinski, who doubled up the runner at first to leave a man on second with two outs. TinCaps starter Osvaldo Hernandez got out of the inning with a ground ball to short from Brock Lundquist.
The TinCaps added on to the lead in the fourth. Center fielder Jeisson Rosario recorded an RBI single to plate Washington to make it, 5-1. Campusano and Arias, once again, followed with a bases-loaded walk and a bases-loaded single to propel Fort Wayne to a 7-1 advantage.
Although the Lugnuts got a run back in the fifth, the ‘Caps answered with a pair of the bottom half. Left fielder Robbie Podorsky drove in Suwinski with a single and right fielder Tirso Ornelas provided a run-scoring double.
Hernandez had a quality start with six innings of work. He struck out six and didn’t walk a batter after a pair of free passes through the first three up.
Lefty reliever Ben Sheckler followed with two scoreless innings. Despite giving up a run in the ninth, Evan Miller’s ERA remains a miniscule 0.76 on the season.
