FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The TinCaps collected their first walk-off victory of the season against the Beloit Snappers (Oakland Athletics) on Wednesday afternoon in a 7-6 win in front of the largest crowd at Parkview Field this season. The 7,377 fans in attendance marked the second sellout of the year at Parkview Field.
Fort Wayne (12-14) trailed 6-3 going into the bottom of the ninth inning before rallying to load the bases with two outs and the game tied, 6-6, for designated hitter Jack Suwinski. With a 3-0 count, Suwinski was hit by a pitch to send second baseman Esteury Ruiz across home plate for the walk-off win.
Beloit (9-11) started the scoring in the top of the second inning. After two errors put runners at the corners, Anthony Churlin singled on a line drive to center field to score the game’s first run and give the Snappers a 1-0 lead.
The Snappers added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning with a two-run single from Churlin that scored Logan Farrar and Jordan Devencenzi to extend to a 3-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, 17-year-old shortstop Justin Lopez recorded his first home run in a TinCaps’ uniform over the right-center wall to pull Fort Wayne within two runs, 3-1.
Beloit added a run in the top of the seventh inning, but the TinCaps responded again in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run double from Lopez to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Snappers came back with two more runs in the top of the ninth inning to give themselves a 6-3 cushion headed to the bottom of the ninth.
TinCaps first baseman Jalen Washington led off the bottom of the ninth with a double, followed by a single from third baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza to put runners at the corners for pinch hitter Carlos Belen.
Belen smacked a first-pitch breaking ball down the left-field line to score both Washington and Ilarraza and cut the TinCaps deficit to 6-5. After the double, Esteury Ruiz and right fielder Tirso Ornelas both walked to load the bases for Luis Campusano with only one out in the inning.
Campusano reached first on an error by Snappers shortstop Nick Allen to score Belen on the play and tie the game at 6-6.
Beloit’s defense registered one more out before Suwinski stepped to the plate to give the TinCaps the walk-off win.
With the win, the TinCaps have already won the series against the Snappers. Fort Wayne is 4-0-1 overs its last five series.
