FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The TinCaps defeated the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs), 5-1, in a seven-inning game on Thursday night at Parkview Field in Game 1 of a scheduled doubleheader. Game 2, however, was postponed due to rain.

Fort Wayne and South Bend now are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday night at Parkview Field with Game 1 beginning at 5:35 p.m. (90 minutes earlier than the originally scheduled start time).

Per Minor League Baseball’s rules, both games on Friday will be scheduled for seven innings. Tickets for Friday are good for both games. Gates will open at 5:05 p.m.

Friday is Harry Potter Night with Postgame Fireworks presented by Gerber Collision. The team will be wearing Harry Potter themed jerseys that are currently being auctioned off at TinCapsJersey.com with all proceeds going to the Soarin’ Hawk Raptor Rehabilitation Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation for raptors through rehab and education.

In Game 1 of the doubleheader on Thursday, South Bend (22-30, 56-65) jumped out to an early lead. With two outs in the first, Jimmy Herron hit a solo home run to left field to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

Fort Wayne (25-26, 57-63) responded in the bottom of the frame. Second baseman Esteury Ruiz hammered the first pitch he saw out to right-center field for his team-leading 12th home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

The TinCaps took the lead in the bottom of the second. With first baseman Jalen Washington at second, left fielder Hunter Jarmon hit a double down the right-field line to put Fort Wayne in front, 2-1.

Fort Wayne added on to the lead in the third and the fourth. In the third, shortstop Gabriel Arias ripped an RBI double off the top of the wall in right field to plate Ruiz and give the TinCaps a 3-1 advantage.

In the fourth, catcher Juan Fernandez scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jarmon and center fielder Aldemar Burgos scored on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Olivier Basabe to put Fort Wayne in front for good, 5-1.

In the win, starter Osvaldo Hernandez tossed five innings, allowed five hits, and only one run, while striking out four. With the start, Hernandez retains the lowest ERA in the Midwest League at 1.81.

The TinCaps have won four consecutive games for the first time since July 2-5. Fort Wayne is currently in sole possession of the Midwest League Eastern Division’s second half top seed for the playoffs with 18 regular season games remaining on the schedule. Click here for the standings.

Small chances for isolated drizzle Saturday night & Sunday. Sunday morning starts cold, with the potential for frost area-wide, but warms up to where we should be this time of year.
