PONETO, Ind. (WFFT) - The Southern Wells football team will play a junior varsity-only football schedule this fall, citing youth, low numbers and player safety as their reasons.
In a statement released on Facebook, the school said:

"We have a small group of young men that are ready to sacrifice themselves in the name of Raider Pride, but this group is simply too small and too inexperienced. We have made the decision to play a junior varsity schedule for this year. This decision was made with two main goals in mind- protect the safety and well being of our athletes and to give this group a year to compete at the appropriate level in order to build for the future."
The Raiders play in the ACAC and were set to open their season against Fremont on Aug. 21.
They do plan to play a varsity schedule again next season.
