Schaafsma came to Fort Wayne before the 2015 season, and was immediately named the team captain. In his statement he said with Ben Boudreau taking over as coach, the team decided to go in a different direction without him.
Schaafsma helped lead the Komets to four straight postseason berths, including a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2018.
In 67 games during the 2018-19 season, Schaafsma tallied 14 goals and 17 assists for 31 points, but was held without a point in the Komets' six game loss to the Walleye in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
In his four seasons with the K's, Schaafsma played in 278 regular and postseason games, recording a total of 81 goals and 100 assists for 181 points.
