FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - The University of Saint Francis Lady Cougars (10-7; 4-4 Crossroads) played host to the Goshen College Maple Leafs (5-13; 3-6 Crossroads) Wednesday evening in Hutzell Athletic Center, and came away with a 56-49 win to pull back to .500 in conference play.

The Lady Cougars came out firing on all cylinders jumping out to an early 9-2 lead. They spent the first quarter building a lead and executed very well on offense to take a 22-8 lead after the frame.

During the second quarter though, the Maple Leafs began to chip away at the deficit. The Lady Cougars were outscored 15-4 through the first seven minutes of the second, and while their lead shrunk to as little as three points, sophomore forward Cassidy Crawford made a layup to put Saint Francis back ahead by five, as they went into halftime leading 28-23.

In the third quarter, the script remained similar to the second as the Maple Leafs came out strong, and keeping the Lady Cougars off-balanced. Consecutive makes brought them back to within two points of Saint Francis late in the frame, but the Lady Cougars responded with a layup and made three to go back ahead 40-32 going into the fourth.

Come the fourth, the Maple Leafs made their comeback complete going on a 9-0 run to start the frame to take a 41-40 lead with just over seven minutes remaining.

The next several minutes were back and forth but the Lady Cougars still trailed by two with under two minutes remaining. Then freshman guard Reaganne Pate got an open shot and sank a three to put Saint Francis back ahead 48-47 with 1:54 left, and they held the lead from there.

Throughout the game, the Lady Cougars shot 41 percent from the floor, 33 percent from beyond the arc, and 77 percent from the free throw line. Crawford had a team-leading 19 points, and also had six assists and six rebounds to her credit. Pate followed suit with 16 points scored of her own, going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc, and sophomore forward Elise Scaggs made 12 points and had a team-leading seven rebounds.

The Lady Cougars resume play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Goshen, Indiana to face the Maple Leafs on the road beginning at 1:00 pm.
