FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - Despite double-digit points from Shayla Sellers and Sierra Bell, Cleveland State beat Purdue Fort Wayne at the Gates Sports on New Year's Day 85-51.
The Mastodons had the advantage in the first quarter thanks in large part to Bell, who scored eight of her 10 points in the opening frame. She was quick to cause havoc defensively, with a steal and a basket in the first minute of play, and was fouled on the drive to the hoop. She converted the free throw, then stole the ball on the ensuing Viking possession. The 'Dons headed into the second quarter with an 18-17 edge.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Bell scored her ninth and 10th points by banking in a mid-range jumper on the push after a Viking basket.
Midway through the third quarter, Krisen Hunt beat the shot clock with a mid-range jumper to score her sixth point of the game. Sellers picked up her third steal on the following possession. A few minutes later, Sellers found Jaida Wolfork on a dish for a layup. Shortly before the break, Sellers posted up in the paint and forced her way to the cup for her ninth point and third-consecutive make. The 'Dons held the Vikings without a basket for final 2:07 of the third.
The Vikings used 36 points from Preseason All-Horizon League selection Mariah White to take the advantage. She made 15 of her 23 shots and had three assists and two steals.
Sellers finished with 15 points, five boards, four steals and an assist. Wolfork led the team in rebounding again with seven, while also pitching in six points.
