FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — Imagine experiencing record-breaking heat one day and in less than 24 hours, snowflakes are flying around.

That’s exactly what is happening across parts of the Rockies.

In Casper, Wyoming, the high on Sunday was 92 degrees and on Monday it was a blustery 31 degrees with snow.

Rapid City, South Dakota experienced a 30 to 45 degree temperature swing Monday.

Many folks woke up to fresh snow on the ground Tuesday morning.

High temperatures on Sunday and Labor Day soared into the low to mid-90s in Colorado.

By Tuesday morning, temperatures were hovering near the freezing mark.

Whew, talk about a shock to the system!

This drastic change in temperatures is due to a potent cold front and a low pressure system from Canada.

You may be thinking, this isn’t unusual for the Rockies.

That’s true, but it is unusual for snow and a large temperature swing to happen in September.

For instance, it has been 20 years since Denver, Colorado has seen accumulating snowfall in September.

The last time the city saw snow in September was in 2000 and the earliest snowfall was recorded on September 3, 1961.

What makes this situation even more unusual are the wildfires across Colorado as we talk about snowfall, winter storm watches and warnings.

Snowfall totals will range from just a few inches to nearly a foot across the state by Wednesday.

This moisture is good news for helping combat the raging wildfires, but it will not end the fire season.

It will take several rounds of rain to help put out the blazes in Colorado, not one single event.
