It is moving to the northwest at 16 mph and packing maximum sustained winds of 125 mph.

The hurricane intensified a remarkable 46 mph during the past 24 hours.

There are no signs it will stop intensifying anytime soon.

Hurricane Laura is expected to strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane later Wednesday.

Laura is forecast to make landfall early Thursday along the Louisiana and Texas coastline.

Life-threatening storm surge with large and dangerous waves is expected to produce potentially catastrophic damage from San Luis Pass, Texas, to the Mouth of the Mississippi River.

This surge could reach up to 30 miles inland from the immediate coastline in southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

Hurricane-force winds are expected Wednesday night in the warning area from San Luis Pass, Texas, to west of Morgan City, Louisiana.

Hurricane-force winds and widespread damaging wind gusts are also expected to spread well inland into portions of eastern Texas and western Louisiana early Thursday.

Widespread flash flooding along small streams, urban areas, and roadways is expected to begin this Wednesday afternoon into Thursday from farbeastern Texas, across Louisiana and Arkansas.

Laura is the fourth hurricane for the 2020 Atlantic season.

According to Philip Klotzbach, a research specialist at CSU, it is the first time that the Atlantic has had 4 or more hurricanes by August 25 since 2005.

Once Laura makes landfall, it will be the most Atlantic named storms on record since 1851 to make landfall in the US by the end of August.

The previous record is 6 set in 1886 and 1916.

So far 2020 has had 6 which include Bertha, Cristobal, Fay, Hanna, Isaias and Marco.
