FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — You have probably seen headlines floating around on social media saying an asteroid will hit Earth near the 2020 Election Day.
These headlines have been using phrases like “SUV-size asteroid heading for Earth” or “Fridge-sized asteroid is heading for Earth.”
Take a deep breath and relax because that will not be happening.
According to NASA, yes there is an asteroid called 2018 VP1 that will make a "close" approach to Earth on November 2 but it is not a threat to humans.
Asteroid 2018VP1 is very small, approx. 6.5 feet, and poses no threat to Earth! It currently has a 0.41% chance of entering our planet’s atmosphere, but if it did, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size.

Yes, the asteroid is the size of a car but that’s actually small in regards to an asteroid.
The 2018 VP1 asteroid measures approximately 6.5 feet and it will pass more than 260 thousand miles away from Earth.
There is another asteroid that will pass Earth on November 3, 2020.
According to NASA, this rock is called 2020 HF4 and it is much larger.
Scientists say this one will pass even further away from Earth.
So at the end of the day, no asteroid is going to impact the planet near Election time.
