FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — For many Fort Wayne community members the list of things to do while stuck at home has run thin.
“Here at Visit Fort Wayne, we invite visitors to come and enjoy our city,” said Kristen Guthrie, Visit Fort Wayne Director of Marketing. “Right now is a very unusual time for us because we can't extend that invitation.”
Visit Fort Wayne is challenging the community to “Play in the Fort” from home.
“One fun thing we came up with was this Fort Wayne Challenge,” Guthrie said. “We are encouraging people to visit some of the attractions virtually, or maybe do a driving tour of Fort Wayne’s murals.”
The challenge provides recommendations on how community members can; spend time with family, be active, support local business, experience art, plan for the future, and celebrate Fort Wayne all while abiding by the stay-at-home order
“We just want to encourage people that things we love, we can still gather around and support,” Guthrie said. “It just looks different.”
One of the recommendations from Visit Fort Wayne is to take advantage of the virtual resources offered by the Allen County Public Library.
“One of the things that our community and our librarians are missing the most right now are story times,” said Stephanny Smith, Allen County Public Library Director of Community Engagement. “We created virtual storytimes that families can access from home. This provides that sense of comfort and normalcy for the little kids and also the adults in their lives.”
Smith said now is the perfect time to get involved with the ACPC if you haven’t in the past.
Fort Wayne residents can sign up for a digital library card that will be sent to their email inbox.
“That allows you to access all of our electronic resources,” Smith said. “Whether it is ebooks, audiobooks, movies, or music all the different things you can still check out electronically while our buildings are closed.”
