FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — Smith Academy for Excellence announced Thursday the acquisition of the former VIllage Woods Middle School property, located in Fort Wayne's south side.

The charter program serves grades four through 12, and officials say it will continue to expand until it is K-12.

Officials say the academy will also begin educating female students.

"It will definitely be a challenge, we have a long way to go," says school leader of Smith Academy, Corey Smith. "We have people we know in our corner who will help us."

Residents nearby Village Woods say the school has empty for a long time and has become an eyesore.

Some say it is constantly broken into, and used for illegal activities.

Many we spoke with say they will see property values increase, and hope the school can become a staple in the community.
