FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - Thousands of people already voted early in Allen County.

The Allen County Election Board said about 900 people voted Friday, Saturday and Monday.

That turnout is similar to a Presidential year instead of a midterm election.

People in line Monday said there is a lot at stake this year.

"I've heard the polls, the lines have been really long. There's a lot of excitement and energy. I thought it was better to get it done sooner than to wait," said Julia Bemis, who voted Monday.

Bemis said for her, the energy is centered around the congressional race between Representative Jim Banks and Democratic challenger Courtney Tritch.

"I think this is a very midterm election. Probably one of the most important ones in a long while," she said.

"Between the Democrats and the Republicans and the arguments and the back and fourth and stuff like that has really got people wound up and ready to just go out and cast their vote," said Darell Stalling, who also voted Monday.

"I think some of the people are just very upset about what's going on in the White House and they want to see a change," said early voter Sonja Knox.

Monday, people waited in line for about a half hour to vote at the Rousseau Centre. Those lines are only expected to get longer as we get closer to the election.

"We had to add more machines and a few more people to come help us out. So we've had to make some adjustments for sure," said Allen County Election Director Beth Glug.

Glug said she had no way of knowing this many people would show up to vote early.

"We did not expect this kind of turn out for a midterm. We usually can hold to what's happened in the past to kind of plan for what's going on in that particular election," she said.

"A lot of people don't vote in the midterm elections so it's great to see this," said Bemis.
