FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — After serving as superintendent for over a decade at Southwest Allen County Schools, Phil Downs made his retirement official, according to the school district.
After 31 years in K-12 education, including 11 years at Southwest Allen County Schools, Superintendent Downs, submitted his retirement letter effective Wendesday.
In late January Downs announced his plans to retire at the end of 2021.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the dedicated and talented staff, students and families of Southwest Allen County for the past eleven years," Downs said. The opportunity to continue to serve Indiana educators at Trine is one I could not pass up.”
Just last month, he announced that his last day as the SACS leader would be sooner than anticipated after being offered and accepting a position at Trine University as director of education graduate programs and accreditation this summer,.
“The interview process with the candidates for the superintendent position is currently ongoing and the district’s new superintendent should be named soon," Bradley Mills, board president, Southwest Allen County schools said in a statement.
For the time being the current SACS Assistant Superintendent Lynn Simmers will take over the leadership responsibilities until the position is filled.
