PORTLAND, Ind. (WFFT) — A judge has sentenced a woman to more than five decades in prison for shooting and killing the father of her child last year.
Jay County Judge Brian D. Hutchison sentenced 32-year-old Esther Stephen to 55 years behind bars for the murder of Shea Briar in January 2020.
Stephen was accused of conspiring with 19-year-old Shelby Hiestand and 19-year-old Hannah Knapke to help kill Briar.
The trio set up Briar and Stephen was the one who ultimately shot him on the back and killed him.
During interviews with detectives, Stephen allegedly told them she was angry with Briar because he petitioned the court for parenting time rights and to change the child's last name.
Stephen and Hiestand were softball coaches at Fort Recovery High School in Ohio.
They were placed on administrative leave on the day of their arrests and then officially fired a week later.
Both Hiestand and Knapke remain on trial for murder charges.
