'Porch pirates' strike Fort Wayne, how to protect your packages

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — Pirates don’t only loot for buried treasure; sometimes they steal the treasure that’s sitting on your front porch.

“It seems like it’s worse around the holidays,” Laura Smyser said.

Smyser has lived in her home in Fort Wayne for 27 years.

She believes it is her responsibility to watch out for anyone who might steal packages from her neighbors’ porches.

“The neighborhood’s always changing and you never know who’s moving in or who’s moving out. Unfortunately, everybody doesn’t play nice,” Smyser said.

These thieves are known as ‘porch pirates.’

A couple of them were caught on camera about half a mile from Smyser’s house.

Susan Wright with the United States Postal Service says people should especially look out for them around the holidays.

“The Postal Service along with other companies are just delivering a lot more packages. Criminals are opportunistic people so this presents the perfect opportunity for them,” Wright said.

Because of the prevalence of porch pirates around the holidays, it is important for delivery services to find creative locations to hide packages.

However, if you want U.S.P.S. to hide your package while you are away from home, Wright says you need to add a special request when you order.

“Well what I would do is I would have them deliver it to an Amazon location like, um, CVS,” Smyser said.

Delivering it to a separate location is exactly what Wright suggests.

“Even if your place of business allows you to receive personal items. We recommend all residential customers register for informed delivery,” Wright said.

One thing that both Wright and Smyser agree on is if you see something, say something.

“It’s a lot easier to prevent it than it is to solve the crime or get a replacement for your package,” Wright said.

If Smyser does see one of your packages get stolen, you can rest assured that she will report it.

“I’m pretty sassy. If I see something going on, I will say something,” Smyser said.
