FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT)- The shutdown fight is over with President Trump declaring a national emergency to get access to funds to deal the situation on the southern border.

"I don't think he should've declared it a national emergency because it's been happening for 30 years and nobody else declared it a national emergency. I don't really think it's right to dip into the funds. What if we have a hurricane down in Florida, Louisiana or Houston and those people need $8 billion," said Fort Wayne Resident Ryan Bennett.

"I'm all for that we need that border wall and if we have to shutdown the government that doesn't hurt anyone really. A lot of those people don't do much of anything anyhow except spend our tax dollars, " Fort Wayne Resident Allan Gernhardt.

Bennett says he agrees with a border wall but thinks the president could've handled things differently.

"It's good to bring jobs to our country but at the same time I think america is a boiling pot and the more diversity we have here makes us a better country.

He is relieved that the shutdown won't continue for now.

"I would say it's not right to have people out here that are going to work everyday and not be able to support their families and do what they need to do. "

Gernhardt says he would like to see more unity in the meantime.

"I feel very badly about all this opposition, this bitterness and hatred. That's very sad."

Do people think the border wall debate will go on for some time?

"I think there's going to be a hit debate over whether they can use them funds for that or not," said Bennett.

"They're going to do everything they can to debate, they're going to drag their feet. These same people that voted for this a couple times years ago. A couple times. It's just political. Anything to get at Trump. They can't touch him. They cannot touch him," said Gernhardt.
