FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — Police say a 20-year-old is in custody for his role in a shootout that killed one woman and injured four more at the Villages of Hanna Apartments early Saturday morning.
Police say they responded to reports of gunshots in the rear parking lot at the 1300 block of Greene Street at 12:41 a.m.
Officers say they heard gunfire as they arrived but couldn't find any suspects.
As they were checking all of the surrounding apartment buildings that were hit by gunfire they found four women wounded in various apartment buildings.
All of the victims were taken to local hospitals by medics, three were initially listed in critical condition and one was in fair condition.
A woman was later pronounced dead. A second woman remains in critical condition and two more are listed in good condition.
Police say a fifth person, 20-year-old Jamarion Thomas, was wounded but is in good condition as well.
Investigators say Thomas is charged with aggravated battery causing death.
They believe there was some sort of argument that broke out between multiple shooters in the parking lot.
Detectives went door to door to check on each resident in the surrounding apartment buildings and canvassed the area for possible witnesses, video surveillance and gathering evidence.
At this time, police say they're still doing interviews to determine if there are more suspects and who they are.
The names of the victims have not been released.
