Huntington, Ind. (WFFT) - One person is dead and another is in custody after a stabbing in Huntington Monday morning.
The incident happened just after 5 a.m. On the 1400 block of Canfield Street.
Huntington police said that's when they found a 29-year-old man unconscious and bleeding from several stab wounds.
The man was taken to a hospital in Fort Wayne where he died.
People who live nearby said they're surprised someone was stabbed to death just hours into the new year.
"Not a good way to start the year out," said Chad Bowers, who grew up on Canfield Street in Huntington. "I had a great time growing up on this block. Riding my bigwheels down the block. It was great growing up here."
Monday, he couldn't believe the house across the street from where he lives with his wife and kids is a murder scene.
"Even in Huntington it barely ever happens, but on this side, in this neighborhood, it just doesn't happen," Bowers.
The father of the woman who owns the house told WFFT the victim and the suspect knew each other and were friends.
They were there for a New Year's Eve party.
He said he didn't know the 29-year-old was stabbed.
However, Steve Fettinger, who was babysitting his grandkids down the street Monday, said he's worried for their safety.
"It's something you realy don't like to see in the neighborhood," said Fettinger.
Fettinger also happens to live nearby.
He said he knew something was Sunday night.
"I saw the police presence last night with flashlights shining everywhere. But, I didn't know what they were looking for or who they were looking for," Fettinger said.
Fettinger added everyone in the neighborhood will keep a watchful eye as they move into 2018.
"It does make you concerned and we keep an eye out for each other pretty good," he said.
Bowers said he's not changing his routine over the stabbing.
"It's always been a quiet neighborhood, a great place to raise kids. I mean I'm sure it's just an incident that's not going to be a regular thing," said Bowers.
Police said they don't know what lead up to the stabbing but they do have a suspect in custody.
