WATERLOO, Ind. (WFFT) -- DeKalb County Sheriff's deputies suspect speed and alcohol are a factor in a crash that killed an Ohio man and injured a passenger Friday night.
The crash happened at 9:35 p.m. in the 900 block of County Road 39 in Waterloo.
DeKalb County Sheriff's deputies say 61-year-old John Vanhorn of Hicksville, Ohio was driving a 2000 Dodge Durango northbound when he passed another vehicle in a no-passing zone, just before a curve.
Deputies say the Durango returned to the northbound lane but drove onto the gravel shoulder and the driver lost control.
The Durango ran into a ditch and rolled several times until it came to a stop more than 700 feet from the roadway, deputies said.
Deputies say Vanhorn was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 37-year-old passenger, who deputies say was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to the hospital with chest and back pain.
The crash remains under investigation.
