FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — An Allen County school district announced Wednesday that it officially has a positive COVID-19 case at one of its schools.

In a letter to families, Northwest Allen County Schools Superintendent Chris Himsel says the district had someone test positive Tuesday.

"For the sake of transparency and the desire for everyone to understand the process, we confirm that NACS had its first COVID case yesterday(Tuesday)," Himsel said. "We followed our plan, and as our Reopening Plan explains, we notified the Allen County Department of Health and assisted with contact tracing."

NACS did not say what school the positive case was at or if it was a student, teacher or faculty member.

He said the district notified the Allen County Department of Health to conduct contact tracing for those who were potentially exposed.

Himsel says for future positive cases only those potentially impacted will be notified by the district.

"Going forward, we will not inform the collective of positive cases, rather we will inform only those directly involved in a particular case," Himsel explained.

FOX 55 reached out to a spokesperson for both the health department and NACS. We haven't heard back yet.

The full letter can be read below.

Dear Parents and Guardians of NACS students,

As we have been reminded by our local and state health departments, the presence of COVID remains widespread in our community.

Despite the extensive measures Northwest Allen County Schools has taken to mitigate the spread of and exposure to COVID, we understand that, like other schools and organizations in our community, we will still encounter cases.

For the sake of transparency and the desire for everyone to understand the process, we confirm that NACS had its first COVID case yesterday.

We followed our plan, and as our Reopening Plan explains, we notified the Allen County Department of Health and assisted with contact tracing.

As requested by the ACDH, we communicated with those directly involved and notified anyone who needed to quarantine.

To respect the privacy of those involved, we will only communicate with those directly affected.

Few people were affected by this case because teachers and students were following the plan.

Not only should implementing our plan mitigate the spread of and exposure to COVID, it should also reduce the number of people directly affected.

Going forward, we will not inform the collective of positive cases, rather we will inform only those directly involved in a particular case.

We will continue to work closely with occupational, pediatric and public health experts to monitor cases and to ensure our plan includes up-to-date practices.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation with these steps to promote a safer and healthier learning environment while also protecting privacy interests to the extent possible.

Sincerely,

Chris Himsel
Superintendent
Northwest Allen County Schools
