FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - People in Fort Wayne will see a new trash day beginning November 5.
Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry and Red River Waste Solutions made the announcement Tuesday.
Since Red River's contract with the city began in January, the company has been fined more than $200,000 for missed collections. That is more than the number of fines issued in 2017 with Republic Services.
Red River tried to follow the same collection schedules which had them crisscrossing the city because of previous annexations without changes to the routes.
The new collection map has drivers in the same area of the city. Supervisors will also be located in those zones to improve quality control. Beginning Saturday, there will be half day service at 311.
“I’m encouraged that the new route maps will set us on a path that will work well for residents and Red River. Positive solutions and teamwork are critical as we continue our commitment to meet the needs of individuals, families, and neighborhoods,” said Mayor Henry.
“Two months ago I stated that we needed to work together to find positive solutions to the issues we were having with garbage and recycling collection. Today, I believe we are moving in that direction,” said Councilman Tom Didier, District 3. “As always, I’m impressed by the dedicated commitment to making our City stronger that I see every day from neighborhood leaders. I am grateful and impressed by the level of commitment to work as a group and to find solutions for improvement.”
“We are very appreciative of the efforts put forth by the working group on identifying the challenges we are facing, and working toward solving them. Everyone knows that change is not easy, but these new routes will make a huge impact on the quality of service we can provide. The routes will be much more efficient and organized and will lead to better service for the citizens of Fort Wayne,” said Weldon Smith, President of Red River Waste Solutions Inc.
Within the next two weeks, all residents will receive an “It’s a New Day” postcard in their mailbox, even if their collection date didn't change.
