FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - E-cigarettes and vaping have been getting some backlash lately, following health concerns and a push to stop teenage vaping, but a new study shows it's the most effective method to quit smoking cigarettes.

The study by the New England Journal of Medicine said vaping is nearly twice as effective in helping people quit as patches and nicotine gum.

“It gives them the ability to still have a nicotine delivery system that’s not severely reduced from what a traditional cigarette has, which is 30 mg of nicotine. You look at the patches and gum, even at max, you’re looking at 4mg," said Shawn Anderson, a local vape shop owner.

Anderson said new legislation to restrict flavors and tax vape products is aimed at curbing teen vaping.

”Taxes and Tobacco 21 tend to be knee-jerk reactions and are detrimental to public health. They do restrict access to these products and make it very hard for people who are 18 years of age and older to be able to get ahold of them," he said.

According to the study, most experts agree vaping is not as harmful as smoking cigarettes, but little research has been done on the long-term effects of some of the chemicals in e-liquids.

”Diacetyl is a chemical that can be found in certain vape flavors and it, in very large quantities being inhaled, can create popcorn lung," Anderson said.

FOX 55 did reach out to the president of the Indiana Smoke Free Alliance for more information, but did not hear back.

Anderson said he and other shop owners do what they can to keep their products from getting in the wrong hands, including turning away customers who admit they're buying the products for their teenagers to keep them from smoking.

”We don’t want to sell to children. All of us do age verification, and even our company has instituted a point of sale that requires the identification to be scanned," Anderson said.
