FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) -- A new section of trail opened Monday in Fort Wayne.
The Beckett's Run Trail gained another 1.8 miles off of Martin Luther Drive.
This brings the total number of miles of trails in Allen County to 125; 95 of those are within the Fort Wayne city limits.
This part of the trail runs through a neighborhood, which gives those residents easy access to different parts of town on this trail network.
"This means not only connectivity, from neighborhoods to destinations such as schools and parks and shopping, but it also means safety for bicyclists and pedestrians," Dawn Ritchie, the Greenways and Trails manager with the city of Fort Wayne, said. "And it’s economic development as well."
She said residents can expect plenty more trail connections in the future.
"The timeline is probably another 15-20 years before we build out our trail network," she said. "I mean we’ve got 125 miles, but the goal is over 300 miles in Allen County.
Eventually, there will be a 17-mile loop that connects this trail, the Pufferbelly Trail and the River Greenway, but officials say that’s a few years down the road.
