FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — Police are investigating the death of 23-year-old Daelon Christopher Locke as a homicide.
Just before 1 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 1200 block of St. Marys Avenue for an unknown problem.
Police say a woman reported to Allen County dispatchers that she arrived at her boyfriend’s apartment and found him unconscious on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.
“The detective came to my house and he asked me and told me it was a homicide, said they had multiple gunshot wounds and his girlfriend was out here and I saw her crying,” next-door neighbor Brittany Russell said.
Locke was pronounced dead at the scene.
“It’s just really sad. I know he was 23, he’s young. I’m 27 and people shouldn’t be dying like that,” Russell said.
She says his death is a tragedy.
“Little kids don’t need to be seeing anything like this. This is supposed to be a safe neighborhood. People like that are making it hard for families like us that have kids and we don’t want our kids to come outside because we’re afraid something is gonna happen to them,” Russell explained.
Ava Multhauf recently moved to Fort Wayne from Milwaukee.
“Very nice homes, very well maintained,” Multhauf said.
But looks can be deceiving on St. Marys Avenue.
“Then later in the evening is when most people are inside the good people and then you have the people that want to cause trouble that come with their guns at night,” she said.
Multhauf wants to see Fort Wayne Police do more for her neighborhood.
“Driving through more frequently and really keeping an eye on the teenagers that like to cause trouble," Multhauf added.
Locke is the 15th homicide in Allen County in 2021.
Police are still investigating and no arrests have been made.
