FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — We are about two months away from the official start of Winter.

In a release Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations (NOAA) predicts a return of La Niña conditions will result in a warmer winter for much of the United States.

This is the second winter in a row with La Niña climate conditions.

The scientists at NOAA have analyzed countless models and trends to formulate their forecast for the cold season.

NOAA’S Winter Forecast 2021-2022.

The winter outlook spans from December 2021 through February 2022.

According to NOAA, above average temperatures are favored across the south and eastern portion of the U.S.

Wetter than average conditions are anticipated for parts of the Northern U.S., Midwest and western Alaska.

According to NOAA, scientists will continue to monitor the widespread, ongoing drought that has persisted across much of the western half of the U.S. since late last year, keeping a close eye on the Southwest region.

“Consistent with typical La Niña conditions during winter months, we anticipate below-normal temperatures along portions of the northern tier of the U.S. while much of the South experiences above-normal temperatures,” said Jon Gottschalck, chief, Operational Prediction Branch, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. “The Southwest will certainly remain a region of concern as we anticipate below-normal precipitation, where drought conditions continue in most areas.”

So, what does all of this mean for northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio?

According to the data, models are trending towards warmer than average temperatures and above average precipitation.

If you think back to last year, the Great Lakes had a tough time freezing due to the warmer than average temperatures deep into the winter months.

Despite system after system, the precipitation came as a wintry mix (rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow).

However, we had one good blast of cold and a robust system that brought record-breaking snowfall in February.

NOAA noted that this season is similar to what was in the forecast for the winter of 2020-2021.

According to NOAA, the seasonal outlooks help communities prepare for what is to come in the months ahead.

It is important to note, the outlook does not project seasonal snowfall accumulations as snow forecasts are generally not predictable more than a week in advance.
