FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — The Allen County Board of Commissioners and Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry on Wednesday announced that wearing masks at county-owned buildings, Citizens Square and all other city-owned buildings will be optional starting next month.
Leaders say this new policy goes into effect on June 1 and masks will no longer be a requirement for both visitors and employees.
City-owned buildings include the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Human Relations Commission office, Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department office, Parks and Recreation pavilions, community centers and youth centers, the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory and Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control.
County-owned buildings include the Rousseau Centre and the Allen County Courthouse.
Commissioners say even though the Courthouse is following the updated policy, exceptions are possible at the discretion of a judge or magistrate for some situations.
Leaders originally announced that a mask requirement would be in place at all city and county-owned buildings until July 4.
County leaders say the increase in vaccinations and decline in local COVID-19 cases were contributing factors in relaxing the mask requirements.
