Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the intersection of Spring Street and Franklin Avenue in connection to a person armed with a gun.
The person who called 911 reported to Allen County dispatchers that a man went inside a residence in the area and fired a gun.
Officers say when to the area they were directed to a home in the 1600 block of Franklin Avenue.
Police say when they went inside a man was found with an apparent gunshot wound.
Paramedics pronounced the victim, later identified as 37-year-old William "Bill" H. Erhardt of Fort Wayne, dead at the scene.
Detectives arrested 37-year old John Lloyd Vires in connection to the shooting.
Vires faces a preliminary charge of aggravated battery and is being held at the Allen County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
Vires allegedly told officers as he was being taken into custody that he had to shoot the victim, but did not indicate why.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Vires claims the victim starting punching him in the face when they were at a bar.
When they left, Vires took him home and they both went inside and there was an argument between them.
Court documents allege that Vires told detectives he knew Erhardt owned a handgun and he kept it somewhere in his bedroom.
Vires allegedly told police that if he could find Erhardt's gun he would not be able to be hurt anymore.
Vires claims he shot the victim once from about 3-5 feet away.
The Allen County Coroner’s Office announced Erhardt's cause and manner of death.
