FORT WAYNE, Ind. (FOX 55) - Throughout the country, nearly 40 million people struggle with hunger and the need for food banks is high with 1 in 7 adults and 1 in 5 children going to bed hungry each night.

September is National Hunger Action month and organizations like the Community Harvest Food Bank want people to know that even those with jobs can go hungry.

"A lot of people right now are talking about the ALICE {asset limited, income constrained, employed} population. so basically, the working poor. these are people that are just trying to get by due to whatever circumstances have had to utilize our services,” says Carmen Cumberland, Executive President of Community Harvest

There’s also one group who are often overlooked when thinking about who needs food, college students.

Nearly 25% of college students are food insecure. Here locally Purdue Fort Wayne and Ivy Tech are trying to combat that by opening up their own pantries.

Opening in November of 2017, The Pantry at Purdue Fort Wayne recognized the need of their students

Dr. Alison Rynearson says, "there are a lot of students who are wanting a little extra food, that need a little extra food. they may be especially motivated to go to events that have food."

Dr. Rynearson says the pantry is open to anybody, but they do serve nearly 50+ students a week “which is 50 people who wouldn't have that food for them, that would go hungry that week."

If you want to help fight hunger, donate food, money, or time to a local food pantry. There will also be a go orange for hunger event at the MLK Jr. bridge in downtown Fort Wayne at 8am on Saturday, September 22nd to bring awareness to food insecurity.

The reason for this rally, according to Cumberland is "hunger does not discriminate. It happens to each and every one of us at some point in our life."
