LIGONIER, Ind. (WFFT) — Noble County emergency units responded to the report of a collisoin involving a car and a train on Wednesday night in Ligonier.
Shortly before 11 p.m. Noble County deputies and Ligonier police officers were called to the intersection of Perry Road and the Norfolk Southern Railroad Crossing in Ligonier.
Officers said when they arrived to the scene they located an Amtrak Train stopped on the train tracks and a car that appeared to have been hit by the train.
Investigators determined that the 2008 Mercury Milan, was traveling westbound on Perry Road.
They determined that the driver tried to cross the railroad tracks in front of an oncoming train which lead to the car being struck by the train.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
They said no other injuries were reported by staff or passengers of the Amtrak Train.
The victim of the collision was identified as 41-year-old William Sanford of Warsaw.
Deputies say Sanford was the only person in the car at the time of the fatal crash.
The rest of the investigation will be completed by the Norfolk Southern Railroad Police Department and Amtrak Police Department.
