GARY, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana high school basketball coach has been fired after throwing a chair and a basketball onto the court during a game Friday.

Nick Moore of Lighthouse College Prep Academy, located in the state’s northwest corner, announced on his Twitter account Monday night that he had been dismissed.

After the game, one of Moore’s assistants also hurled a chair onto the court, and the school’s athletic director was ejected during the game for arguing with referees.

The IHSAA, the state’s governing body, said on Tuesday that the Lighthouse boys’ basketball team had been put on probation for the rest of this season and athletic director Lawrence Sandlin had been suspended for Saturday’s game.

Sandlin was ejected in the third quarter, and Moore lost his temper after a traveling call in the final period.

He tossed a metal folding chair onto the court and attempted to throw a second chair before eventually settling for the second ball.

It was reminiscent of a similar chair-throwing incident by then-Indiana Hoosiers coach Bob Knight in 1985.

School officials, the IHSAA said, took action against Moore and assistant coach KeVan Ford, who threw a chair across the court after the final buzzer.

Bowman Academy, Moore’s alma mater, won the game 91-90.

“There is simply no place in education-based athletics for this type of poor behavior,” IHSAA commissioner Paul Neidig said. “This adult behavior will not be tolerated. I commend the Lighthouse CPA administration on their swift action in dealing with the situation and expect a positive change in the expectations and standards moving forward.”

Neidig also complimented players from both teams for not escalating the situation. Despite being put on probation, the IHSAA said Lighthouse will be permitted to play its remaining regular-season games and participate in the state tournament.

Moore finished his two-year tenure at Lighthouse with a record of 20-38 and his final game was played in a gym named after his late stepfather, Marvin Rea Sr., who led Bowman to the 2010 Class A state championship. Moore played on that team.

“I feel like I could’ve handled things in a better manner,” Moore told the Northwest Times of Indiana on Saturday.
