FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT)- There's been a lot of talk about what isn't working in health care, including increasing costs, issues with accessibility, and patient care, but a new investment firm in Fort Wayne aims to change that by targeting problems within the system.

Mend Medical opened in Fort Wayne in October. The president, Ben Joseph, said the health care system is broken, and he can help heal it.

"We're going to be making strategic investments in people and companies and technologies that are solving real problems, systemic problems, in health care," he said.

Joseph said the problems are keeping people from accessible and quality health care. They're not only investing in medical companies, they're partnering with them.

"We're all blessed to be a part of a U.S. health care system with wonderful technologies and providers and care. I think we all, in an honest moment, would recognize that health care is also broken," he said.

The biggest issue is companies are putting profits before patients. Joseph said on average, health insurance premiums claim 1/3 of a family's income.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have also found 20 percent of patients are misdiagnosed.

"If you look at anything that consumers buy and people buy, they want information, transparency. They want choice. And those things are readily available really in every other sector than health care," Joseph said.

The parent company of Mend Medical is Ambassador Enterprises, a Fort Wayne based, philanthropic equity firm.

"It's a name by design. It's Mend. And mend not only the body, the soul, and the spirit, but also just the process," said Daryle Doden with Ambassador.
