FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT)-Police are investigating after a battery at a north side Kroger Wednesday morning.

The incident started around 8:00 a.m. at the Kroger at Saint Joe Center Road and Maplecrest Road. An off duty officer inside the store was alerted to a battery in the parking lot. The officer approached a man who was allegedly hitting a woman against a truck.

That's when the man tried to get away in the truck, which was later found to be stolen.

Meanwhile, someone in the Kroger store called 911, saying the off duty officer had been shot. Police at the scene told FOX 55 that was not the case, and the officer was not hurt.

The suspect apparently took off into a nearby field. Several police cars showed up, including a K9 unit. When the dog was deployed, the suspect surrendered.

The female victim was reportedly not cooperating with police. Both she and the male suspect were taken to the Detective Bureau to be questioned about the battery and the stolen truck.
