FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT)- Health officials across Indiana are seeing an increase in Influenza like illnesses. The state was dealing with sporadic cases, but now it seems to be more widespread.

"When you're out and about getting your flu shot, ask your doctor or pharmacist 'Are there any other vaccinations I should get in the beginning based on my age or health conditions?'" said Dr. Deborah McMahan, County Health Commissioner.

Health officials are noticing people over the age of 65 and children are more likely to be affected, especially after the holidays with gatherings and travel. The more contact you have, the higher the risk. That's why they're urging you to check on the elderly.

"If you have any older family members be sure to check on them. If they start getting lightheaded when they stand, if they start coughing up green and yellow stuff, you need to call the doctor right away," McMahan said.

Lisa Davis said it's too much of a risk. She got her flu shot back in October.

"We're all catching a cold right now. In fact, I just came in to get cold medicine," Davis said.

She knows all too well what not taking care of yourself can do.

"A couple of years ago I didn't get one and I got really, really sick, and so I got one. I didn't want to do that again," she said.

Dr. McMahan said usually you see this kind of thing in March, but now the flu can come at any time.

Key things to keep in mind are to keep hand sanitizer with you at all times, and make sure you wash your hands. McMahan said the friction in the water does the best job at getting rid of bacteria.
