FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - Starting third grade, students across Indiana are required to take the standardized state test in math and English.

This year, students will notice a more personalized approach.

"That allows no only our educators but even our students and families to walk away with good data, good information and very accurate information on how their children are doing," said Indiana Department of Education spokesman Adam Baker.

More than 500 teachers across Indiana helped develop the ILEARN test.

The test will ask questions based on student answers, so students with high abilities are expected to have harder questions than students who has special needs.

"The whole idea is when you have your end result and your score, you will have a more individualized look at our students," Baker said.

Baker said this approach can also help teachers improve lesson plans.

"An instructor can sit back and say well 75 percent of my students seem to struggle with this concept so I'm going to spend some extra time in the classroom," Baker.

ILEARN also ditches many things from the I-STEP+, including the timed tests and the pass/fail grading system.

Instead, there are different levels of proficiency, from not proficient to above proficient.

Next year, schools will know the answer within 12 days.

"If you are able to have those results sooner, within that year and you know how your students are doing, you might be able to reinforce those concepts or shore up some ideas before they take off in the summer," said Baker.

The window for students to take the ILEARN runs from Monday, April 22 thru May 17.

Each school can decide when during that window students will take the test.
