BLUFFTON, Ind. (WFFT) — The Indiana State Police announced Monday they investigating the death of an inmate that happened over the weekend at the Wells County Jail.
The Indiana State Police said were contacted by the Wells County Sheriff on Sunday morning, after jail staff found an inmate unresponsive in an isolated jail cell.
The sheriff told ISP the inmate, identified as 31-year-old Dylan E. Richardson of Bluffton, was found unresponsive in his isolated jail cell at approximately 1:25 p.m. by jail staff.
Investigators said jail staff immediately began providing CPR to Richardson until Wells County emergency medical personnel arrived on scene and took over lifesaving measures.
Richardson transported to the Bluffton Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 1:57 p.m.
Richardson was being held in the jail for a violation of his probation terms since Sept. 16, according to investigators.
They said Richardson was held in an isolated cell related to "COVID-19 precautionary protocols since his intake."
The Wells County Coroner’s office is actively conducting their investigation to determine the cause of death.
An autopsy has been conducted, which included toxicology testing.
The results are still pending.
This is the second inmate death that occurred in a northeast Indiana county jail this month where an inmate was found unresponsive in an isolated cell.
Once the Coroner’s investigation is complete, those findings will be shared with ISP detectives, allowing them to complete their investigative process.
