FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) -- Although more people are getting cameras and ring doorbells, that hasn't stopped package thieves.
The Fort Wayne Police Department said you can never be too careful. Someone needs to be there to get it.
"Have them delivered to a friend’s house that you know is home. There's a lot of people working from home these days. Most people know someone working from home. Just make that the alternate address," Fort Wayne Sgt. Sofia Rosales- Scatena said.
Thieves are always tracking down boxes big or small, so once you get your packages, get rid of the boxes.
"Never put on display what you have in your house. A lot of people go looking through those kinds of things and when they are looking for something in particular, they'll know who has it by what's sitting at the edge of the curb," she added.
Amazon has also created different ways to prevent theft through different delivery options and if you want to keep gifts hidden for a surprise there's an option for that too.
"There are a number of convenient delivery options for customers. In particular, customers who would prefer to pick up their package while running an errand, or maybe they don't have a secure location at home can use Amazon Hub which is our network of pick-up points," Amazon spokesperson Alyssa Bronikowski said.
If you find that your package is stolen or misplaced, Amazon’s customer service line is in operation 24/7 and they have people on standby to help fix the problem.
Fort Wayne police say to report the missing item and have your serial number handy so they can help you as well.
