DECATUR, Ind. (WFFT) — Fall sports in Adams County will have a much different look in the stands after a meeting with the local health department and athletic departments due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Adams County Health Director Dr. Michael Ainsworth announced that fall sports in Adams County will have limited fan attendance.

The only fans who will be allowed at games are for those supporting senior athletes.

"... I have made the decision that senior-student athletes would be permitted (4) four adults to attend games specific to their sport," Dr. Ainsworth said in a statement. "No fans from visiting schools will be permitted with the exception of games played within our county."

Those in-county matchups consist of Adams Central, North Adams and South Adams school districts.

Ainsworth said made this decision "because Adams County has one of the lowest infection rates in the area and this will permit unchecked fans from other schools coming into our community."

Adams Central Schools Athletic Department issued the following statement Monday.

"Recently the Adams County Athletic Directors met with our Adams County Health Director to discuss the logistics of carrying out a fall sports season.

While we would love to have packed stands as in the past, due to current conditions a decision has been made by the Adams County Health Department that for the 2020 fall high school and middle school sports season Adams County schools will not have fans in attendance.

However, with the support of our administrations and under the direction of Dr. Ainsworth, each Senior will be allowed to have four parents/adult family members in attendance for all athletic events hosted by the schools in Adams County.

We want to thank Dr. Ainsworth for allowing these families to support their student-athletes as they compete in their final fall season, while also keeping the safety and well being of our communities as a priority."

The North Adams Schools Athletic Department issued the following statement Monday.

Recently, the Adams County Athletic Directors met with our Adams County Health Director to discuss the logistics of carrying out a fall sports season. While we would love to have packed stands, as in the past, due to current conditions a decision has been made by the Adams County Health Department that for the 2020 fall high school and middle school sports season, Adams County schools will not have fans in attendance.

However, with the support of our administrations and under the direction of Dr. Ainsworth, senior athletes may have up to 4 parents/adult guests at HOME events and/or events held at Adams Central and South Adams (Adams County schools). No other guests may be in attendance.

While we would all love to be in attendance to support our school and athletes, we are asking families to please strictly adhere to these guidelines. It is our hope that this small sacrifice will allow our athletes to participate safely this season. Let’s let our actions and speech reflect: It’s for the kids. Everything we can do to try and protect the children and provide as much normalcy as possible, we will do. We’re in this together!

We want to thank Dr. Ainsworth for allowing these families to support their student-athletes as they compete in their final fall season, while also keeping the safety and wellbeing of our communities as a priority.
