HAMILTON, Ind. (WFFT) - Hamilton Community Schools' current operating levy doesn't expire until the end of next year, but district officials want to get it before voters now because without, the school will look very different.

"One option is unfortunately school closure," said Dr. Nichole Singer, Hamilton Community Schools superintendent.

Hamilton Community Schools is one of the smallest districts in the state, with only 288 students enrolled.

Since school funding in Indiana is directly tied to enrollment, Singer said the district is putting the referendum before voters in the fall just in case they need to try again.

"If it would not pass at that point, then there's a waiting period and we would not have enough time to allow that waiting period to occur," she said.

The Hamilton school board hasn't decided a rate it will ask voters to approve, but Singer said will be between 70 to 80 cents per $100 of assessed value.

Voters approved a 44 cent rate in 2012.

"We do not receive enough general fund dollars to support the educational programming we have in place here, so we are looking to renew that referendum," said Singer.

Singer said despite declining enrollment, the district still offers the same classes the larger surrounding schools offer.

"I think what we offer is a family feel. I tell people we are a private school for a public school price, free," she said.

There will be an informational meeting about the proposed referendum on June 14 at 5:30 p.m.
