FORT WAYNE, Ind. (FOX 55) - The silence as the Tinsley family arrived to say goodbye to their beloved David today was louder than the engines of the 30 squad cars that surrounded them.

Officer Tinsley had been in one of those squad cars for 16 years before his sudden death last Monday.

Police and other first responders from all over the state gathered at the church to say goodbye, each wearing a white carnation with a red dot. The white represents a good life, the red, representing bloodshed.

It wasn’t an easy day for anyone, including the Fort Wayne Fire Department, who lost Eric Balliet this time last year.

Jim Murua, Assistant Chief of the FWFD says, “that {death of Eric Balliet} was a sad situation for us just like this is a sad situation for them. It rises all those emotions up again having lost someone in the line of duty.”

The procession took Officer Tinsley on one last trip through the southeast quadrant, a place where he wanted to be.

“He wanted to be where he could do the most good for his community. The southeast division, they are busy, especially on nights which Officer Tinsley worked. It just shows that he wanted to do the best for his community by placing himself there,” said Sergeant Jim Seay of the Fort Wayne Police Department

People lined the street to see the procession and honor the man described as kind, hard working, and a hero.

Erin Raatz took her family to see the procession with her sons in mind. She said, “my sons are wanting to be police officers when they get older, like this one, and just wanted them to see the impact the police officers make in the city. we wanted to honor his life by coming down here and waving flags.”

In front of the courthouse, a memorial to honor Officer Tinsley, where his final call was made.
