FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — Police said a man in Fort Wayne shot and killed himself after officers pulled him over after receiving a call that he was having mental health issues Thursday morning on the city's northeast side.
Officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department were called to 4035 Willshire Court at about 7:45 a.m. regarding an argument involving a gun.
Police said a family member reported that a man left the home with a gun in his hand and they were concerned he was having mental health issues.
A short time later, officers said they were able to locate a vehicle matching the description given by family in the area of Maplecrest Road and Brian Drive.
When officers pulled the man over they said just before they were able to speak with him, he shot himself in the head.
This is the second suicide that happened this week with police present.
We again would encourage anyone who is having mental health issues, or who knows a family member that is having mental health issues to reach out for help," FWPD Public Information Officer Lisa Woods said. "Please call 911 as our officers are specially trained to deal with these issues or to guide you in the right direction to resources in our community."
