Fort Wayne misses out on Division III NCAA Championships for second year in a row after cancellation

For the second year in a row the division three NCAA Basketball Championship will not be played in Allen County due to low expected participation numbers from schools.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — For the second year in a row the division three NCAA Basketball Championship will not be played in Allen County, officials announced late Wednesday night.

NCAA leaders say the cancellation is due to low expected participation numbers from schools for all sports.

NCAA D3 final four trophy 2020 via Downtown Improvement District

This affects not just basketball, but swimming and diving, indoor track and field, ice hockey and wrestling.

The cancellation will be a big blow to staff at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Organizers at the Coliseum were hoping to bounce back from the building's loss of revenue in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
