FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - The man responsible for killing a 2-year-old boy in 2017 was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Mitchell Vanryn was sentenced Tuesday in Allen County Superior Court.
He was convicted in March of aggravated battery and domestic battery. A jury found him not guilty of murder in Malakai Garrett's death.
That's when Malakai was beaten to death in November 2017.
Vanryn took responsibility and apologized, telling Malakai's family he bruised the toddler while trying to perform CPR.
However, the family didn't believe him.
Malakai's mother, Amber Garrett, is scheduled to stand trial in June on neglect charges.
