FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - Allen County has one of the highest infant mortality rates in both the state and the nation.
To combat such rates, community leaders gathered at Citizens Square to launch the Infant Mortality Challenge, headed by Fort Wayne UNITED and Healthier Moms and Babies.
The challenge will raise money to provide more cribs and infant safety classes for those who need them.
Healthier Moms and Babies' Executive Director, Paige Wilkins, says "our families really need to understand how babies should sleep" in regard to sleep and premature deaths being major contributors to the mortality rate.
