FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — A local festival that celebrates the area's German heritage each year is officially canceled.
Officials announced that Fort Wayne Germanfest 2020, which was supposed to be from June 7-14 is now canceled.
"Due to the COVID 19 pandemic and in order to protect the health and safety of this loyal community, The Germanfest Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Germanfest Festival," Abby Heidenreich with Germanfest Fort Wayne said.
Heidenreich says thousands of attendees and hundreds of volunteers come together to enjoy tradition, drink, food and fun at the annual festival celebrating the deep German heritage of Fort Wayne.
The Germanfest Committee says they have always been proud to celebrate the deep German heritage of the city of Fort Wayne and look forward "to the greatest celebration yet next summer for the 40th Germanfest."
The committee says they plan to make some additional announcements online.
As the crisis diminishes, the committee says they hope to plan a smaller scale German celebration later in the year.
